Charcoal cross for sketching

Russian "Sauce” are pastels that are a cross between something like Conte chalk and pastel. Colors are shades of grey, brown and blue-grey and white. Made from Chasovoyar clay and soot. You get ten colors: black, grey, light grey, brown, grey-green, grey-azure, warm grey, ocher, bistro and white. They come in a wooden box which does not protect them from damage. Mine came broken into lots of pieces so I have small pieces to draw on; not happy about it. harder to hold. If you search the internet you can find some great examples of Russian sauce sketches. The effect lends itself very well to shading and you can achieve both deep darks and subtle shading. Try them on tinted pastel paper.

Pros
  • High quality imported European colored pencils
Cons
