Almost impossible to use

I didn't buy them for shoelaces. I use it to hold the strainer in the dishwasher that seals my dishes to keep them from tipping over. They are a really good size and are very durable. The problem is that they are IMPOSSIBLE to open. Too hard. My fingers hurt after trying to open them. And I have to use a few on the item and THEN attach it to the dishwasher shelf. You shouldn't come back.
