Review on πŸ“» Retevis RT22 Walkie Talkies: Rechargeable Two Way Radios with Voice Activation & Emergency Alarm - Ideal for Outdoor Adventures and Cruise Ships (4 Pack) by Steve French

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Lightweight, easy to use, FRS included (no license)

BLACKED FOR OVERVIEW. does not require a GMRS license to use. It was a good choice if you don't need in-ear headphones and are in the countryside. 16 out of 22 popular FRS+GMRS frequencies (Checked on CHIRP). According to the Retevis website, as of November 2017, their RT-22 radios will ship with FRS frequencies under updated FCC rules, so no license is required for use. CONSTRUCTION. They were really easy. The plastic is typical of Motorola Talkabout radios; looks strong enough. The belt clip is very simple and functional, but I would be afraid of breaking it if pulled hard enough. As advertised, these radios are thin and small, sitting very compactly on the hip if you're looking for disguise. OFFER. In suburban environments. (densely populated 1-2 story buildings) from home to car, the observed range is about 0.75 miles. I don't have the equipment to test actual transmit power, but perhaps a radio with a detachable antenna would give better range (the RT-22 has a very short fixed antenna). However, I have seen UK videos on YouTube claiming a distance of 5-7 miles, mostly in a totally rural area, in a flat area, with no obstacles outside and outside. 1 star deduction for range. SOUND QUALITY. Audio quality from the microphone is clear, although speaker sound is a bit tinny (compared to radios like the Baofeng BF-888S). PROBLEM. Aside from the range - I would prefer more distance but may not be able to achieve that given the obstacles around me - the only issue I have is that when using an in-ear headset the sound from the mic isn't as loud or is strong . The same in-ear headphones used on other radios will play the same volume regardless of whether you speak into the device's mic or the headset's mic. but when using the same headset on the RT-22, the microphone is noticeably quieter/muffled. Maybe that's how the microphone jack works.

Pros
  • Portable audio and video device
Cons
  • Cable is shorter than others
