I bought these for security in a 17 story high rise building with attached garage and two apartments. I have no problems with distance and/or communication across floors. It gets a little static on the 16th and 17th floors, but that's about it. Because they operate at the same bandwidth and frequency as most walkie-talkies, they can be programmed to work with other Cobra, Midland, and similar devices.
