These radios work very well, much better than all FRS radios and most GMRS radios. The HF range is good and powerful for such a small size. Very practical to have at hand quickly. Simple controls make it easy to use. And for the price, it's excellent value for money. So much so that I'll be buying more, especially as I've already "lost" 2 of these to my kids! It comes with an odd set of pre-programmed channels so I re-programmed 14 FRS simplex channels which are perfect for these radios. Now the FCC has revised the FRS rules for 2017 to allow a full 2 watts on all FRS channels. Also supports PL and DPL, but these are programmable per channel with no front panel selections, so it's best to leave them as carrier squelch. They are not listed as FRS radios by the FCC, but other than being programmable, they likely comply with the revised rules, so there are no practical problems in using them as such. As for programming, download the RT22 software from the internet as it's easier than trying to find it on a floppy disk. The programming software is easy to use once you have a list of FRS frequencies at hand. The programming cable is not just a USB cable, it has a wiring diagram, so don't lose it.
