We use FRS radios for communication between cadets at our smaller motorsport events. Maximum range required is no more than 3/4 mile, typically in line of sight with no obstructions. We've been using crappy Motorola FRS radios for years and figured that was the level of quality we stuck to for reliable radios priced at $30-$40 a piece. We also liked that they used standard AA batteries so we didn't have to worry about keeping them charged. Based on the reviews of these radios, we decided to give them a try even though they are rechargeable. So far we've loved them! For our purposes they are perfect! I was able to program them to have all channels operate on the same frequency to make them "idiot proof". (No one can set the wrong frequency) And the sound quality compared to Motorola, even new ones, is amazing! Part of that is the extra output power (1W vs. 0.5W). But they also don't have the transmission lag (press a button, wait a second to talk) of other radios, and the hardware just sends and receives a much cleaner sound. Definitely an important step forward in every respect! We use them for about 8-10 hours at a time. So far they have gone through two events without charges. So the battery life (turn on and monitor, maybe receive 100 short calls per hour and maybe send 10 short calls per hour) is at least 16-20 hours. Their charging speed appears to be similar to that of a cell phone. They are fully charged in less than 2 hours. We liked them so much we immediately ordered 10 more along with a 6 slot charger and got rid of our entire old set of Motorola radios. We hope they will last for several years. But honestly for the price. For much better sound quality, we wouldn't complain if we had to replace them every year or two!
