Well I was surprised to see that my favorite phone is still on sale after all these years. This is rare for an electronic device. I was a bit taken aback by all the negative one star reviews so thought I'd give my opinion on this lovely device that I've had for about three years. I will not repeat any further information from the review but will try to clarify the important points that I have experience with. I would have given it 4 stars but felt I had to balance the ridiculous 1 star reviews with a 5 star rating. I have a large two story house and the reception is good unless I place the base station across the room. up. For example, if the base is on the far right in the upstairs room, the reception is blurry on the far left in my downstairs kitchen. So I think I've found the limit of phone reception in my house. The headsets have no reception issues (with the base station) when used outside the home or garage. The range in the front and back yard is wonderful. The bottom line is that reception depends on the design of your home. My solution was to place the base closer to the center of the house rather than the extreme corner of the room to the right or left of the house. I'll admit that my old $399 Panasonic phone system didn't have this problem. not really the fault of the phone. If I were to rate products with one star based on their battery performance, then everything would be silly. When our electronics and laptops are equipped with larger and longer-lasting batteries, we complain about the increase in weight and size. I hope that battery technology will satisfy us at some point in the future. Some of my phones are out of batteries and need to be replaced every year. Some of my little used phones have lasted over two years. I have six headsets so I've bought about 10 batteries over the years. I have two unused batteries left, but buying another spare isn't a problem as I can find them on Revain for about $6 each. The ones at Uniden are about $10 each. Only the one I bought from Uniden turned out to be defective and didn't hold a proper charge after 6 months. What I find amazing is how advanced and feature rich the Uniden CLX-485 phone system is. Color screens, USB PC compatibility, ringtones, Outlook compatibility, intercom and every imaginable bells and whistles. The list goes on and on. When I bought my device, I didn't see such a long list of features on phones. I don't see many home phones with these features now, three years later. The typical cell phone is much more advanced than most home phones. I would suggest that the comparison buyer download the manual and compare all the comparable phones. This is how I buy one and it works perfectly. Here are the shortcomings I've encountered: 1) The labels and some operations of the base control buttons etc are sometimes confusing when using it instead of a phone 2) The range and battery life could be better. I've seen better and worse. I prefer better! 3) When you select a callback number from the saved "Redial" and "Caller ID" lists, the phone does not add "1" to phone numbers with area codes that do not match yours. . This has been a real annoyance to me for many years. Over the past few years, I've learned how to fix this problem from another reviewer here at Revain. Push the joystick down to select a number, press "*" on the keyboard and a "1" will be magically added to the selected number for you to call. Maybe that's documented somewhere in the manual, but I wasn't aware of it for the first two years that I've owned the phone. 4) It seems that this phone model is not created by Uniden. When I was checking for updates etc many years ago it looked like this and another similar group of Uniden phones was created by another company. None of the other Uniden phones had such a range of advanced features. I believe the software could have had an update but that was the level of support. Many of the usability issues seem to occur with electronic devices prior to firmware and/or software upgrades, which are typically performed. I'll admit it's not perfect, but these are minor things that seem like easy fixes. I could be wrong but I don't think Uniden will be able to update any features so what you see is what you get. Thank goodness everything works well enough. Well that's all I have and I hope it helps. I have not followed any updates to this model from Uniden or other competing models, so you should do your own updated research. This is a very good phone and I have been very happy with its performance over the years. I thought by now all phones had all the features this phone has and more. If you like advanced, feature-rich gadgets, you'll love this phone. If you're not interested in advanced features, range, and battery life, I recommend trying or finding another phone system first (you might be better off with a cellphone). Much luck.
