I bought these to replace a table lamp that needed a new fluorescent tube. The bulb costs more than one of those bulbs (and now I have a few spare bulbs). Installation was easy - I installed 2 brackets with screws from the kit, snapped the lamp in place and connected. The downside is that the cord and not the lamp. This means that part of the cable has to remain visible to get to the switch and I have to "find" the switch. Also, my old table lamp was designed to keep the light out of my eyes when I'm sitting at my desk - this lamp shines straight into my eyes. I either need to add a shield to protect my eyes or find a way to mount them at a 90 degree angle. The lamp itself is made of cheap plastic. He'll probably work just fine if he doesn't get hit. The light output is about the same as the 20w fluorescent bulb I'm replacing.
