Review on Kingston DataTraveler Micro 3.1 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive - Ultra-Small & High-Speed Silver Drive with Metal Case (DTMC3/64GB) by Scott Reid

A worthy disc, but it could have been better

I recently bought this disc, as well as another disc from Samsung. The Samsung was a dollar cheaper and has twice the read speed. One star deducted for that. However, this drive is almost half the size of the Samsung drive. This thing is tiny, so if you're more concerned about size, this drive is a little more portable. Other than that, performance is exactly as advertised, the read speed I got was exactly 100MB/s. The write speed is around 25 MB/s, which is normal for a drive of this price range/size. I've noticed that the writing to the disk is bursty, so the speed ramps up to 25MB, then drops to around 5, then immediately ramps back up. This repeats until the transfer is complete. I'm not sure what to do about this, but the Samsung drive I bought doesn't. Another strange thing I noticed. The drive is formatted with FAT32. Why do manufacturers still ship drives formatted in FAT32? If you want to copy files larger than 4GB to this drive, you will need to reformat it to exFAT or NTFS. I recommend exFAT as it is compatible with both Windows and macOS. (The Samsung drive came the same way) All in all, you probably won't regret buying it, but the Samsung drive I bought is a better deal if read performance is important to you.

Pros
  • Lots of positive emotions
