We've been using organic/non-toxic mattress toppers for years - we fold them in half, put pads on top and they never fail - completely wet! When you wash them they need to air dry to avoid "ruining" the pad and leaking, but they leaked to begin with. I finally decided to go old school with the vinyl sheets our parents used and it made changing sheets a breeze! We put it on a zipped safety pad and put a washable pad on top and if our kids have an accident we just take the wet pad, wipe it down and run 1 light load of laundry. Whether your kids are around or potty trained, this is the only mattress topper that saves you time, protects your mattress and keeps you sane! Yes, it's a bit crunchy and smelled slightly initially (we deflated ours/put it in the garage for a few days), but it works. It's not forever - just for us to get through this phase!
