Review on πŸ“ Syba SY-ENC50104 4 Bay 3.5” SATA III HDD Non-RAID Enclosure – USB 3.0 & eSATA Interface, Black by Frankie Wesley

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Overview of 8 bays. The hard drive supports 3.3V reset pin

This review is specific to the SYBA 8-Bay External Enclosure (all three models: 4, 5 and 8-Bay have different functions and are NOT similar. Be sure to read the details before purchasing your chosen product.) Tested on Windows 10: PROS - only works as a JBOD device, which is what I wanted (it's not a raid device and advertised as such). Personally, I don't need the extra features and premium pricing that Raid offers for my particular use case. This is a USB 3.0 only model. Tested disks by scanning all drives at once. The realistic speed seems to be up to 240,300 MB/s. This speed is shared by all hard drives. (Might be faster for other people, but that was based on my script and computer). - USB 3.0 doesn't seem to "consume" power beyond the built-in performance of PCI-E (which is a good thing). My integrated PCI-E USB 3.0 card does not have an additional power supply connected to the card. On other devices, this causes my drives to turn off or even cause BSODs. The built-in power supply of this particular model gets the job done and uses the USB cable only for data transfer, not for additional power. -- This particular 8-bay model has a power switch for each hard drive bay. -fact stays pressed and turns back on when power is turned back on (other reviews mention that it doesn't). -- WORKS WITH 10TB -- Tested with these remote white label 8 and 10TB EasyStore external drives, which are known to reset the 3.3V pin or have a known shutdown feature . The HDD shows up with no problems (competitor Mediasonic advertises that they do NOT support this. I took a chance and it turned out that the SYBA external enclosure actually supports it). - SMART data is actually passed to the operating system. (The StableBit scanner can properly scan and read SMART data). -- Works with StableBit Drivepool -- Because its JBOD can easily use Windows Bitlocker encryption -- Trays make it easy to install hard drives without tools. I found that the easiest way is to lay the hard drive on one side first. When installing the other side, you can lift the small "side tabs" to slide the clip back just enough for the drive to snap into place, then easily slide the plastic into the screw hole. Definitely better than other brands that don't have this moving part as other brands make you bend the plastic so it breaks more easily. This brand doesn't require you to bend the plastic to insert the hard drive. CONS - The fans are expected to be slightly more powerful at high speeds. I know that very loud fans are annoying for most people, but I prefer louder fans over higher hard drive temperatures. This thing has a hard drive that runs at 114.8F while the hard drive runs at 100% for hours. (BUT still an improvement over the 118F+ I would get in a standard EasyStore external case in a hot server rack). -- No documentation UNVERIFIED -- Unable to verify disk ejection from OS (because my computer says disk is in use) NOTES. The supplied screws are used to attach a 2.5" to 3.5" tray. (Learned through the SYBA website).
