Came with no instructions but there is only one switch marked on/off. Just pull out the plastic battery insulator and you're done. Turning this switch on and off will cycle through the different modes before finally turning off the light. Personally, none of the flashing modes interested me. I just left them on, which probably reduced battery life. I would prefer a slow fade and then lighten mode. Batteries were included. It comes with a screwdriver to access the battery compartment, but unfortunately these batteries are button type so replacing them can cost more than the light cost. Requires 3 LR44 button cell batteries. I wish it ran on AAA batteries. The battery compartment narrows to prevent falling into a wine bottle. I also used them to decorate the dollhouse and houseplants to create a nice festive atmosphere in the room. Would buy again.
