We purchased this to go under our treadmill so as to minimize any damage (dents/wear) to our new carpet and hopefully muffle the sound to downstairs.There was one that was the *exact* size as the "footprint" to our treadmill - but I'm glad we went up a size. It made it much easier to tweak where we wanted it in the room.It comes rolled up - so we just set it out for a few days to help flatten it before arranging it where we wanted. Admittedly I'm pretty sensitive to smells and did notice a bit of an odor when it first arrived. It dissipated fairly quickly and I don't notice anything at all now.Note: I can't conclude how much is attributed to the exercise mat because we got new carpet (including thicker under pad) at the same time - but overall there's definitely been a dampening of sound.I'll update if we have any issues with durability or cleaning.
