TMD-50: Caution! The description given here states that the gauge reads up to 2498 degrees Fahrenheit. This may be general information for other models in the series but does not apply to the TMD-50. This gauge has a "3 1/2 digit display" so the left hand character can be nothing or a "1". This means that the maximum number displayed is 1999, as stated in the user manual that came with the device. You can probably measure up to 2498 degrees Fahrenheit with this device, but you'll have to do it in Celsius and do the conversion to Fahrenheit. Of course, the two thermocouples that come with the device will melt at any temperature approaching that upper temperature . So you need to buy a specific pyrometer thermocouple separately to account for that height (for oven use, etc.). Most people probably understand this. to read this boiling point. You can't do that in Fahrenheit. When you click the "Adj" button to adjust, nothing happens. If you switch to Celsius display it works and you can set it to 100 degrees C and then switch back to Fahrenheit. All of this was too much for me, although I know and use the Celsius scale, I live and work in the US where almost everything is measured in Fahrenheit and I think this MFG would have designed this unit for the work here/ to modify. This is clearly a European device (German company) slightly modified to work in F so it can be sold here. I contacted Amprobe support, the staff at Fluke replied (although no one answered my questions) so this is probably being imported/sold here. in the US by Fluke as a cheaper alternative to their more expensive products. On the other hand, it is very well made, quality materials, quality display, quality buttons, etc. It looks like it will last and work well. Got it back and paid a few bucks more for the next model with a 5 digit display, hopefully I can measure Fahrenheit up to the stated limit.
