They are made of thick vinyl and the flange that attaches to the roof is large enough to cover the screw holes of previous vent covers. They have a built in seal to prevent water from entering the tube under the cover. The gasket sits about 1-1/2 inches above the bottom of the base or roof, you can be sure your pipe will reach this height above the roof. I had about 1/4 inch pipe after which the gasket was installed.
