Great all-purpose travel lens for everyday photographers

Supporting ByDucrab's review. If you are considering this lens, read his (her?) review, I think it fits the analysis. I'm not a professional photographer but I have Sony cameras from the mid 80's starting with the Maxxum 7000 so I always have a camera for family gatherings, travel etc. I recently got a full frame Sony Alpha 99 as an 'upgrade' " of my Alpha 77. I have several Tamron APC lenses for my a77, so it was only natural that I look at Tamron for my a99. In short, this lens is excellent if, like me, you shoot infrequently. I'm sure there are better lenses out there, but do I need to shell out a few thousand dollars for a lens that a pro will use? no (Hell, even if you're a pro, you might need this lens for "everyday" use so you don't risk damaging your expensive lenses at a family picnic.) This lens offers great performance at a reasonable price for a full-frame lens , and I can use this lens for a variety of shots without having to change lenses. No more "misses" because I had to spend a minute pulling a telephoto lens out of my camera bag. No more sore shoulders lugging around a camera and lens bag.

Pros
  • Ideal for a small home
Cons
  • New competitors have arrived
