Review on πŸ”§ Autel Diaglink OBD2 Code Reader: Extensive All Systems Diagnostic for ABS, SRS, Engine, Transmission, EPB, Oil Reset (DIY Version MD802) by Justin Sherman

Revainrating 4 out of 5

The scanner was well packaged and looked very good.

I've been waiting to review this for a while! I decided to buy it when my WIFI OBDII dongle started to go haywire, but I was hesitant to choose it over the more expensive version that included data packs for all car brands. It's one of those things where you try to think ahead, which buddy or family member will one day ask you for help with a car and when you'll need a scanner that works with their car. Nissan guy. And the rest of the family is Hyundai, Kia or VW. I calculated that the cost of the scanner plus 2 more data packs (1 provided free) covering all our cars and trucks (7 to be exact) was a little cheaper than the full data version. So I bought this version. The scanner was well packaged and I found it to be a very professional tool. I was happy with that. I started installing software on my Windows 7 computer and didn't have a very pleasant experience from then on. My computer didn't have the correct driver and the app looked a bit outdated and was unable to access the scanner. Well, to be clear, my career has been in computing/IT, so setup and troubleshooting is trivial for me. I fiddled with this for about 2 hours and was tired of the effort but still determined. After reading some other Revain reviews, I found the best advice: use an external USB microSD card reader. (I understand that probably not everyone has one of these!). The software recognized the card and successfully loaded the Autel app! There have already been product updates from there, and these product updates seemed to fix all of my previous issues. Thumbs up! I "bought" my free vehicle kit for Nissan which also included Infiniti models. I have a Pathfinder 04 and a Frontier 98 and was particularly interested in checking the ABS codes for both cars and specifically cycling the solenoids in the ABS module. Unfortunately, the possibility of using exactly these diagnostic modules depends on the car, which does not support them, but it has some other useful parts (e.g. real-time monitoring of ABS speed sensors). So it was a shame, but not really a tooling constraint, it's the age of the car. It doesn't matter though as I can manually extract the special codes from the car, but this scanner definitely contributes to that information. I got to know all the functions of Nissan and I was satisfied with the device. Maybe a bit sluggish going through the systems but thorough enough for my needs. At this point I downloaded the Kia and Hyundai pack (again, a data pack contains data for both brands) and tested it on my 11 Sorento. Being a newer vehicle, it supported a few more diagnostic features of the tool and I was happy with that. The real test was the VW Touareg 06 on which I fixed a terrible misfire. Interestingly, the VW data package included vehicles from Bentley, Bugatti, Skoda, Audi and SEAT. Not that I'll ever work with these cars. Not only can it read all OBDII codes, but it can also diagnose any Touareg electronic system. Yes, it can tell you what state the power seat knobs are in, if you really want to know. I used it to read out the headlight system diagnostics. While I have not personally used the VW VAG-COM diagnostic tool, I believe this is likely to be a very effective replacement for it. It's probably cheaper and not some sort of pirated software. For misfire troubleshooting, real-time misfire data (cylinders, counts) and several other user-selectable data monitoring points such as timing advance, various temperatures, RPMs, etc. can be displayed. With this problem with the car, it definitely came in handy. For this particular vehicle, he was able to read and reset the status of various systems: steering, brakes/ABS, gearbox, transfer case, lights, climate, seats and a few others. quite capable. Your specific vehicle will determine how many features are available. I think if you have cars with more advanced electronics it will be more useful to test and reset non-OBDII systems. It has other features that my cars don't have (e.g. resetting the engine oil service light), but it seems like a very well thought out device. It was very easy to buy additional transport packages. The Autel software application has undergone several significant updates since purchase and these updates have definitely improved the application's user interface and speed. At the moment I don't need the microSD in the card reader; It works great with the included USB cable. If there weren't any initial setup issues this would probably be a 5 star device, but consider it somewhere closer to 4.5 stars.
