Firmware bugs are still a problem
I've read the reviews here but I was hoping by December Yamaha would fix firmware bugs that are causing the drive to go bad on many systems is working. Well not yet, I got the November 2000 build, downloaded the December firmware update and the Adaptec software update, but at least on my Win2000 system the drive had problems reading some CDs (including 2 of the 3 CDs). came with the drive) spontaneously "switched off" and could not burn a CD. This wasn't an issue with the IDE or DMA settings. So best to wait for another firmware update unless you're willing to take the risk. I sent it back and am very happy with the replacement Plextor 12/10/32.
