In fact, this particular trimmer is excellent because you can easily separate the halves so you're only trimming one side. Be careful to cut in a direction where the blades will not pull the grain away from the work piece. If the fibers are not parallel to the workpiece, cut one side at a time in a direction that does not break the fibers. This applies to every trimmer of this type.
