Review on πŸ’§ Resideo RCHW3610WF Wi-Fi Water Leak & Freeze Detector: Advanced Protection for Your Home by Joshua Douglas

Ideal for cellar surveillance.

I bought this leak detector for my parents. You have a basement that is constantly flooding. For the first 10 years of my life, I didn't even know there was a floor in the basement. Eventually they called one of these agencies, who assessed and corrected the situation. Yes, but they have a drain pump that needs to run every half hour or so and a desiccant that drains into the pump due to the very high humidity down there. So if something goes wrong, they get into trouble pretty quickly. They are old enough to retire and now they travel a lot. Last summer, during a storm when they weren't there, the sump pump went out. By the time the rain stopped and my sister came over to check on the house, the water had already started to rise. That's why we chose this leak detector. Setup was very easy. The sensor runs on AA batteries, which were already included. You connect the cable, download the app and follow the on-screen instructions. Put the sensor where you need it and forget about it. If there is a problem, you will receive a notification on your phone. It also allows you to email others of your choosing. So in our case, my parents get a notification and my brother, sister and I get an email. If there's a problem and my parents aren't home to take care of it, or if they're in an area that doesn't have cellular coverage, this is a way for each of us to be made aware of the problem as well by us can take care of it. The sensor detects high water, temperature and humidity readings, all of which can be turned on or off via the app. In our case, we know that humidity and temperature fluctuate wildly, so we turned off the humidity and temperature alerts. We tested it and each of us only received a water warning if we wanted it. The information is also available in the app if you want to check something you are not notified about. So far we've been hooking up the device for a couple of months and it seems to be working very well for us. We had no problems with signal or connection loss. We lost the ability to connect to some other devices when we first set it up (my laptop and my sister's iPhone couldn't connect to my parents' wifi), but this is fairly typical of their router and has been fixed by a quick reboot of everything. I don't think the device itself played a part in this, but thought it would be worth noting if someone else looking at this also has a spirited router. I think this monitor will prove very useful and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who has a situation that requires constant monitoring of humidity, temperature and/or possible flooding.

Pros
  • Connects directly to standard home WiFi - no additional hub needed
Cons
  • Hard to tell
