Probably best in class, a worthy upgrade

I've had every new version of this camera since the Powershot S2IS. To me, this is a worthy upgrade from the previous version, the S5IS. I'll start by saying that I'm not an "experienced user" of digital cameras. I just want high quality photos with no problems. This camera offers that, but also offers a lot of room for growth with lots of custom settings that I can use if I want to learn how to use them in the future (like aperture priority). Pros: - Face recognition technology works well in initial tests. Now I can take a selfie and the lighting is very good. I think this technology has gone from a marketing buzzword to a real asset. One of the added benefits of face detection technology is that the camera can intelligently remove red-eye from images without using the red-eye reduction lamp. The retractable and rotating viewfinder has always set this camera apart from other companies. This allows you to take less intrusive snaps and has many other benefits. Thankfully, the SD card compartment is separate from the battery compartment, as was the case with the S3IS. Thank you Canon! Sometimes I just want to take a few shots and now I don't have to open the battery cover to take out the SD card and insert it into my PC's card reader. - Battery warning. I think this is the first version to have this and it's very welcome. 28mm - I will never again buy a camera without a built-in wide angle lens. I also have a Canon Elph 880IS which is a very powerful "pocket" camera which complements this well - Sharp 20x zoom. The images are very good even at high magnification. In a lighted room, I can read the pretty fine print on a photo taken from across the room - it's truly amazing. Image quality is better at higher ISOs than previous models. Every model improves on that, and this one definitely continues that. I haven't tried the "I-Contrast" setting (on or off), but I can say that some of the street shots I took show good detail in dark areas. Finally the standard lens cap. It doesn't have a tether, but you can buy a cap mount at camera stores that attaches to the front of the cap. The one I have has a rubber band that goes around the base of the lens. I also got an improved lens cap which can now be crafted as usual. I like the new layout of the controls, such as B. a separate on/off button and a display button. I don't think I'll like the scroll wheel, but time will tell. For those unfamiliar with this camera, there's a dedicated video button that lets you quickly record videos without fiddling with the controls. weight and shape. I liked the S5IS shape a little more. This one feels too "square" and the grip feels too sharp. It's bigger and heavier, but that doesn't matter. This is to be expected with a new lens. The only thing I would like to improve is the size of the rotating display. It can be used but the 3 inch on my Pocket SD880IS is much better and competing cameras offer a larger display. In order to get a larger display, you probably have to do without the electronic viewfinder, which many will not like. . I would have liked a larger display. I don't know if the compressed video mode results in lower quality as I didn't shoot movies with previous versions of this camera due to the larger file size. I like that the video takes up less space now and I will use the video feature of this version. Canon released a similar camera with HD video capabilities, but as far as I know it's not available in the US. Visit the Canon website for more information. if you want to explore it. There is no way to screw on filters on this camera like there was on the optional lens adapters for the S5IS. It seems like Canon could have easily done this by threading the end of the lens, but maybe I'm missing something. , I expect Canon or some other company to come out with an adapter that will allow the use of filters. I mostly used filters just to protect the lens. I don't know if the software has improved because I don't use it. If you need date/time stamps on your photos, you need to do it with software. If you like this camera and are interested in a great pocket camera to go with it, check out the SD880IS. It has many of the same features as the Digic 4 chip, face recognition, wide viewing angles, I contrast, and a nice 3-inch display. was too square" and the grip was "too sharp". After using the camera for a while, I liked the shape of the camera because it helps hold the camera more stable and prevents it from falling. Below There is a rib on the top of the index finger and above the other three fingers that hold the camera, which helps hold the camera securely, makes it more stable when taking photos, and prevents it from falling when carried.
