I have had problems with my aquarium and high nitrate levels (range 80-120+ppm - the recommended level in the aquarium should be 40ppm). Despite frequent (weekly bi-weekly) 20-25% water changes, limited lighting and feeding the fish, my nitrate level would not go down. I bought Denitrate based on reviews and a description that said it helps lower nitrate levels. Unfortunately I didn't notice a big difference in nitrate levels before and now. It REALLY helped make my water very smooth and crystal clear (I had tannins in the water giving the tank a cloudy orange hue from the peat pellets in the filter to lower the pH due to hard water). In general I would say that lowering nitrates can help if you have slightly elevated levels, but if you have high levels then in my experience you will probably be looking for another product that will help. .
