I've been living in my apartment for 20 years and suddenly drain flies appeared in the kitchen sink - I've never seen them. I believe they came from drainage sludge that must have accumulated over time (the sediment wasn't viscous enough to slow runoff but apparently thick enough to house drainage flies). First I used Drano, it helped but didn't completely get rid of the flies. So after a few weeks I ordered this product. After two days of use, the flies were completely gone. The flies have been gone for a few days. If the flies show up again I will update this review. Note that I used the drain snake to clear the sludge in the horizontal drain pipe between the two drains in the kitchen sink, but I only did this after all the flies had been killed. passed. I didn't find that many cuts in this horizontal pipe, so cuts further down the line could be to blame. Incidentally, I used a FlexiSnake centipede drain snake, which I highly recommend for mud cleaning, as it's "bristly" (if that's the right word!) - but the centipede isn't very long, so I can use a professional plumber assign it to clean it up. full length of all my drains. After reading many forum posts on the subject, I realized that desludging is the most effective way to truly get rid of drain flies. That being said, however, this product worked for me quickly and was a lot cheaper. I will save my money and have all my drains professionally cleaned in a few months. I used this product on my kitchen sink in the following ways: First, I squirted a few ounces onto 1) a garbage drain, 2) another sink drain, 3) the bottom of the dishwasher (keep this in mind - as this is a possible sludge drain). Then I poured just a few ounces of water down each channelβenough to flush the gel down the drain, but not enough to dilute it too much. I put silicone mats on both sink drains (the kind you can cover microwave bowls). I also sealed the dishwasher tightly and taped the dishwasher's small overflow hole next to the sink faucet (remember to remove the tape afterwards if you do this). I did this to catch flies and keep the fumes inside so they would effectively "gas" the flies and any larvae. Don't worry, the "smoke" isn't strong or toxic at all - just a faint orange scent that dissipates quickly, but I think these light fumes can be effective against flies if confined to the sewers. I left this setup with no water overnight. Then I flushed the drains and repeated. So far so good - no flies. I can do this every month if I'm disciplined! Good luck - and good luck getting rid of your drain flies!
