Bought these to replace my old system when I upgraded my speakers. I've always used open caps, but this time I went for closed caps. I installed 7 loudspeakers and inserted the cable from the side with the plugs open. With the connectors covered, the cable went straight in, so I figured there would be less mess on the back of my receiver. There would also be no bare cable as there would be with exposed connectors. I used 14 gauge wire. The wire was a little tight to get through the hole, but it went through. I don't know how easily a 12 gauge or larger will fit, but a 14 gauge or smaller is no problem. The plugs came in with a nice, snug fit and didn't dangle at all. I also used them on the speaker side and again there were no problems. They were expensive but they were of good quality.
