Review on πŸ“± PalmOne IIIx Portable Device by Andrew Agarwal

Great product but fragile

I have had a Palm IIIx for over a year now but I have to buy a new one because I dropped it. The palm didn't fall far - 3 feet or so - but now it's useless. White stripes cover the display and the digitizer no longer works reliably. I've tried opening the case and reinstalling the boards, which fixed most of the issues, but the digitizer is consistently inaccurate. Even when recalibrating the digitizer through the settings, Palm thinks the spot I'm pressing with the stylus is wrong, and this makes the Palm impossible to use. I bought a thin leather bag but she obviously couldn't protect the Palm anyway. Also, the velcro is now peeled off to keep my palm out of the case. A real shame as my Palm IIIx is essential. I bought the Intellisync software to sync with the calendar software I have on my PC and I use it every day to keep track of my schedule. Combined with an address book of names and phone numbers, I have one place to determine what to do and who to do it with. I don't use other apps that often. I've tried the email app but it's too basic. I get over 200 emails a day and really need auto-filtered email folders to handle that volume. I'm using Eudora and the Palm email app doesn't support folders or filters. I can't even convince him to just download the messages in my inbox as everyone else has been filtered out. The ability to upgrade the operating system to IIIx proved important. Version 3.3 of PalmOS supports infrared synchronization with a laptop. It's a godsend for when I'm on the go and for syncing during long meetings. The ability to easily upgrade from PalmOS 3.1 made this possible. I've also downloaded a few games to while away the hours on long flights - PocketChess is my favourite. It's very easy to play - just drag and drop the pieces. I considered the Handspring Visor as a replacement, but the lack of upgradeability of the operating system is a major stumbling block. Handspring devices are stuck on Palm OS 3.1 and the Handspring code appears to have changed at this point with no hope of changes post 3.1. In the long run, this can become a real problem as Palm continues to improve PalmOS. The Springboard expansion slot is a great idea, but expansion cards are so few that their usefulness is a joke. The colored cases looked cool until I saw them in person rather than in a photo online. They look cheap and disgusting. So I'll probably buy another Palm IIIx. The IIIe cannot be upgraded and I don't see why the color is so useful to justify the IIIc's staggering price. The Palm V looks cool but I'm even more worried about its fragility, and the Palm VII might be great if it could actually surf the web, rather than using extremely limited "web snips". I don't understand why the color is so useful that it justifies the IIIc's incredible price.
