The documentation for this thing is very minimal and doesn't really explain much about the differences between music settings 1, 2 or 3. Also, it doesn't say you should have adjust the music volume to at least 48 dB or higher for sound activation to work. When I first tried this I thought it wouldn't detect any sound played from an external speaker and would only be activated by sound played through its own speaker, but it doesn't. I just didn't have enough external speaker volume. Although they say that the speaker in this device is high quality and doesn't wheeze, the sound quality isn't very good. It sounds like music from a clock radio. I compare it to the sound of the original Echo Dot - a bit tinny, especially at lower volumes. It gets pretty loud with no distortion, but not much bass or treble. If you were using it outdoors you probably wouldn't notice, but at home or in the bedroom you'll want to use your own speaker. Works while charging.
