No app or smartphone is required for setup. Stand all alone.
Works better than expected! Excellent reception. Bought for 11 years. A smartphone app is not required for setup at all! It is completely self contained with a Speedtalk SIM card ($5). A minus is the inability to block / restrict incoming or outgoing calls. My child receives incoming calls from strangers, which is dangerous. Teach your child not to answer unfamiliar phone numbers. Also, phone numbers entered through Contacts can be accidentally deleted by a child with a sensitive touch screen. There is no way to block them after entering. Teach them how to make calls using contacts or direct call (entering full phone number with area code).
