They work as if it were difficult for a small child to understand. 7 and 9 year olds in my house can easily, 3 year olds can't! You just move the pen and see that it's relatively useless. It's also 100% effective for capturing the males in your house as they are just as helpless as three year olds and just wiggle and give up! I would give 5 stars if it fits my grips better. You're still pushing the lever, so I have to push it every time. However, I blame it on too much leverage.
