This is the thing to buy - no need to spend anymore

*** Latest update: Hurricane and summer storm weather is coming. I bought this device on 08/18/2008 and today is 04/30/2013. The radio still works and has outlived both the more expensive and manual crank models. It has a backup battery, 3 AA batteries - Duracell is the best brand you can buy. Just make sure to buy your (fresh) batteries well in advance of the storm warning and supplies. NEW UPDATE: Looks like NOAA changed the horn system and this device now turns off after a warning instead of continuing to transmit. like buying. This is a great update from NOAA. About a month ago, we received tornado warnings every 15 minutes for 48 hours, which is unusual for Naples, Florida. This was another time the radio paid dividends as it gave location and direction and it made tracking easier as we don't have basements in Florida so early warning was a plus. One thing that can get on people's nerves is the little tinkering warnings and that's what you get the most in my area, but then again it's been very helpful and is the most reliable model I've bought. I would recommend it to anyone who lives within 100 miles of the Gulf Coast and Atlantic and Tornado Alley. I repeat this recommendation intentionally. Storms are a time when lots of information doesn't hurt. Its backup battery is three AA batteries, so have extras on hand in case the batteries die just when you need them and the radio has a battery. meters so you know in advance. Duracell batteries are the best brand you can buy. UPDATE: The device is a year old and works like new. I had four other weather radios and if you spend more money you won't get a better device. It's time to buy ***. This device could save your life, and I'm not working for it. There's no reason to spend more money on features you don't need. Don't waste battery life on an AM/FM weather radio, buy a separate radio. SAME works great, but if you're not a sailor and live near the water, be aware you'll get a lot of small boat warnings. In addition, during a storm, you will receive advance warning about the storm and where it will land during the hurricane. Tornadoes, hail, and other weather emergencies are covered, but with SAME technology, your alerts are localized, and that's a big deal. A note: NOAA (US Government) weather radio sometimes uses cities that we may not be used to in everyday life. So it's good to have a status card along with the radio so the radio will bark over a place that doesn't sound familiar you might find it. As with smoke alarms, it is best to change backup batteries every 6 months. This isn't a requirement for a radio, but it will extend its lifespan if caught without power. Have a flashlight with a walkie-talkie handy so you don't have to look for it in an emergency. Have a plan before the storm and don't forget to talk to your kids before every storm. about your family plans
