These bulbs come on instantly and are very bright. The manufacturer claims that each bulb puts out the same amount of light as a 400w bulb, but I couldn't find a reference for lumens. Comparable lamps require about 6000-7000 lumens. Note: I am not a photographer. I bought these bulbs to mimic sunlight indoors to help with seasonal affective disorder. For me, the use of such bright high-frequency lamps definitely helps. (5000-6500K) The manufacturer packs the pair well, so damage in transit seems unlikely. The only thing I want to highlight is that the bulbs are huge! I've seen big fluorescent tubes before, but I've never seen them that big. 11 inches long (including nest) and 4 inches in diameter. It is big! The base itself is 3-1/2 inches in diameter. Since each lamp uses 105 watts, ensure adequate ventilation. The electronics in CFLs are sensitive to heat, so I wouldn't put them in sealed containers. - assuming you can find one big enough to fit!
