Solid introduction to the Leatherworking Kit but not for the intermediate/professional

Update: After about a month of use I downgraded my rating to three stars as the tools were working poorly. The hammer has started to deform, the dies don't have deep indentations, and the stitch holes are uneven. Still a good gift for a beginner, but not quite suitable for an amateur or professional. I wanted to buy a set until my usual tools were sent to me and I decided on this one because of the variety. Tools, as well as including some items I didn't have or didn't use. I work a lot with leather and while I wouldn't recommend this kit for experienced hobbyists or professionals, it is good for beginners and contains most of what you need to get a solid foundation on the fundamentals of leatherworking. . It's more comprehensive than the base Tandy kit, and after checking the prices, I found it cheaper to buy than to look for separate tools. The tools themselves aren't great, but for the price, they tend to be tough, as you'd expect. This would make a really great gift for someone new to leatherworking and could be a good opportunity to try out the techniques to see what tools you might want to invest in later. PROS: Biggest pro by far, variety included. There are tools to complete almost any detail project, including punches/tools, chamfering, sewing, and paint strokes. The set came quickly and was well packaged. Everything appeared to be in good condition except for the hole punch which was a little discolored but certainly appears to be working well. The four punchers were in a ziplock bag that still had some oil in it, which came off with a paper towel and seemed to prevent rusting. The ruler and tape measure are accurate, the thread is strong and evenly coated, and the variety of rivet and snap colors is pleasing. A very useful map guide to the needle. Stamps are decent, leaving heavy dents (see photo). There were no duplicates and they seem to be about the same quality as the plain Tandy stamps with a good combination of images and bevels/textures. The edge of the mower is very sharp and glides smoothly. There are a few tools that I think I'll be using a lot, notably the gouge, rotary knife, and rivet setter. CONS: The hammer is offset to exactly one side to be visible and left dents/chips fell off the black side after first use. The scissors are not leather scissors and I will be putting them in my painting supplies, not in this set. The serration punch bent inward after a few uses, I bent it back with the pliers I had on hand. Carpet pin broke on first use and others appear to be of the same quality. Feel free to put a lot of pressure on the awls, but they'll probably work for thinner hides. I will most likely be replacing the following tools and do not recommend buying a set if you intend to use these items frequently: hammer, scissors, pliers, sewing needles, leather thimbles and rivets/buttons. Overall I'm glad I bought this kit and am willing to replace some of the poor quality items as they are easy to find. It is worth buying in order to have a lot of special tools at hand.
