Works well and is energy efficient but only the bottom part turns it on/off

I've had it for about a month and I really like it. It works consistently with both the app and Alexa. Installation was easy too. The best feature is that it is more energy efficient than competing switches. I first bought a Leviton switch (DW15S-1BZ) and found it very warm. I bought this TP-Link switch and installed it in another room for comparison. This switch is cool to the touch. It uses some power even when the light is off, but not noticeably. The TP-Link switch is about 8 degrees warmer than room temperature. In comparison, the Leviton switch was 20 degrees warmer, which is warm enough to notice. My biggest match is that you have to press the bottom to toggle it on and off. When you turn it on, expect to be able to click at the top. However, nothing happens there (you can't suppress it, so you know something is wrong). If you press the bottom part, it turns on/off. It works great, but isn't as intuitive as the Leviton switch, which lets you use the top/bottom range to toggle it on and off. However, you adapt quickly. I plan to buy more of these despite this lack. I've attached some photos showing temperature readings on this switch and another. Both are off. This shows that this one is much cooler because it is more energy efficient. The temperature was measured with a Fluke infrared temperature sensor. I also recorded current and voltage traces using a Keithley DMM7510 (see various screenshots attached). I've found the output to be around 0.5W when the switch is off, or 1.62W when the switch is on. This was three times less power when the switch was off compared to the Leviton switch (1.86W whether it was on or off).

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Without insurance
