So many laptops these days have fewer and fewer USB 3 ports, and with USB-C becoming the standard, this is a great device. My laptop doesn't have Thunderbolt capability via a USB-C port, so I bought that instead of a video cable. I recommend using it for very low power peripherals such as keyboards, mice, or self-powered external hard drives. External hard drives or non-powered chargers should be connected to the system's onboard USB ports. You can remove low-power devices from the onboard USB ports to make room for high-power devices.
