Review on Milliard Citric Acid: Premium Pound PAIL for Cleaning, Cooking, and More! by Joshua Mejia

An excellent raw material for frugal hard-water homeowners

We use this citric acid three ways at home and it works great. We have hard water and all three uses help reduce the damage caused by hard water residue. First, we use it in the dishwasher as a direct replacement for Lemi-Shine. It works just as well to prevent hard water stains on dishes for 1/4 the cost. Use in the same amount as Lemi-Shine. The second time we use it as a tile spray in the shower to avoid hard water residue in the shower. To do this, we mix 2 tablespoons of citric acid with 1 liter of pure white vinegar and spray lightly on the tiles and grout after the shower. It works amazingly well at neutralizing the alkalinity of hard water and preventing hard water residue from building up. Only very rarely do I now have to brush the joints to remove limescale deposits on the joints. Much cheaper than the shower sprays you buy at the grocery store for the same purpose. But it's a bit of a pungent smell (though not a bad smell) in case you have a sensitive nose. It smells more like a mixture of vinegar and vitamin C tablets. For this application, it might work as well as diluted with some distilled water, but I've never tried it. Our third use is the same citric acid/vinegar mixture described above, but for the occasional cleaning of ceramic tile grout lines. Spray the grout line liberally, leave for a few minutes, then scrub with a grout brush. This is still not a very easy task, but it does a very good job of softening and removing scale stains from grout. It's cheap and more effective than most grocery store cleaners. As for the grout brush, I really like the Groom Mini Shark Cleaning Brush, also available here at Revain.com.

Pros

Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
