The phone jack on my new Mac mini is on the back of the computer, so I used it in one of the USB ports. No sound but it actually stopped the video I was watching. I tried it with DVD: same result! Don't send it back, I'll throw it away. Note. In the new Big Sur OS, you can choose the audio output: computer speakers (no!), monitor speakers, or headphone jack. So I'll take a regular short male-to-male phone cord and leave it plugged in. I can then plug my headphones into it if needed and it won't interrupt the audio from the monitor's speakers. Being new to Big Sur I didn't know this beforehand or I wouldn't have bought this.
