I studied ballet professionally and later taught all levels. I wear street shoes 8.5 with a normal to wide fit and 8-8.5 fit perfectly. I'm not sure how many ballet teachers in the US will embrace this new ballet shoe format for beginners, but it works! Elastic fit closer to vamp but heel remains. (Ask your teacher or studio first about the dress code if using ballet slippers.) These are fantastic slippers to wear at home, do basic ballet, tai chi, yoga, etc. They are really well made and durable. When I wear them all day, the soles of my feet get hot, but that's normal for ballerinas with full leather soles. I'm thinking of getting a pair in black to match my black leggings. Great design!
