I actually bought peppermint oil to use in window openings to discourage bees from building their nests. They HATE the smell of mint and this worked for me. I soak a cotton swab in oil (you can't use fake, you need pure mint oil, not the smell of mint) and first wipe the marks and the window frame. I then soak (2) more cotton balls in peppermint oil to place in each lane before closing the window. If you get a lot of rain, you should probably re-oil the balls. It is a non-toxic and pleasant smelling solution that will not harm your windows, children/pets or bees. I'm severely allergic to their bites so this should work for me. The price is comparable to the price in stores, but Revain always has a stable supply, which cannot be said about many stores now. Arrived quickly, well packaged. It would be nice to buy it in a larger size = my only complaint. Highly recommended.
