I like that this whistle doesn't have a 'pea' to rattle. I also like its slim profile that fits perfectly into my backpack's shoulder straps. The Fox brand rescue whistle, while pealess, is thicker and more difficult to attach, more cumbersome and bulkier to fit on a backpack. I have both The Fox 40 whistle can - and this is a subjective opinion - be a bit louder than this whistle. But they are close enough that this whistle's slim design helps me use it on the trail. Being thin and less fragile, it will be with me when I need it. Of course, if someone simply left a whistle in a car's glove compartment, the Fox 40 could be the one. I love this whistle. Its small profile is especially good if you're making a survival kit, for example in a small dry box. Other whistles may take up too much valuable space in the kit. (Note: Whistles are notoriously poor long-range lifeguards, especially in windy conditions; always have backup rescue options on hand including cellular phone, reflective mirror/CD, fire-starting supplies, extra flares, and GPS distress systems if you're in the deepest woods. . ).
