I installed this on my main battery power cable to the amp for my 250w subwoofer amp. It should be installed in the engine compartment as close to the car battery as possible. They have recommendations for 12 to 18 inches, but that's not as important as a secure attachment to the body. It's riskier to have it at the recommended distance but not securely fastened than to have it securely fastened when it's at a slightly greater distance. I think it's much more practical than fuse holder. I've tested it under load to make sure it works because I doubt it will ever shut down, barring some odd occurrences as I make sure all my wiring is done right. I've never had a blown fuse or trip during normal use. It's definitely a good idea to use one of these, or a suitably rated built-in fuse, otherwise you could lose your entire trip and short out that circuit.
