First, I have a Gitzo tripod that costs many, many times more than I paid for this tripod. However, you cannot always take a heavy tripod/ball head with you on expeditions. I bought it to go rafting in the Grand Canyon. It's light, relatively durable (though not windy), and can handle my DSLR (Canon 7d) with a wide-angle lens. I only used it for astrophotography in the quiet evening hours. I took some great shots of the Milky Way that required a 30 second exposure. I was able to take some clear photos of the stars using the remote shutter cable. I think the larger version would have been even more comfortable as I had to bend down a bit to frame this model. Also, I'm not sure it will reliably hold a DSLR with a telephoto lens (zoom 70-200 or 100-400). The controls are damp, but they work and nothing is broken. I will find other uses for this tripod in the future. It's amazing how light this tripod is!
