Review on πŸ”’ Cable Matters Dual Bay 2.5 Inch External SSD Enclosure: 10Gbps Aluminum USB C Enclosure with RAID Support - Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 / Thunderbolt 3 Compatible by Richard Gross

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Big Disappointment

I bought this enclosure thinking I could just put two 4TB SSDs with data on them and run them like the JBOD configured enclosure. I wasn't worried about not being able to run TRIM on the SSDs since the SSDs wouldn't get written to very often, so I was able to remove them and cut them off with a TRIM-compatible SATA-to-USB cable. .I was wrong. Drives installed in the enclosure must be formatted in the enclosure to be accessible, even though they appear as separate drives in the computer. This probably means I can't erase, cut, and then replace them without reformatting. I don't want to reformat at all because it could take a lifetime if I have to do it very often. Unfortunately, I didn't find out about this until after the return period had closed. It is better to wait for the release of the new 2.5-inch 8TB drive, and then buy it and install it in your computer, fix TRIM problems and free up desktop space. Right now I'm using two of the cable issues for TRIM compliant single drive enclosures (if they could make these TRIM compliant why not use a dual enclosure) and occupy an extra USB port.

Pros
  • Practicality
Cons
  • Security
