June 2017 CHANGE/UPDATE: I bought a PS4 Pro last month which comes with a Toshiba 1TB 5400rpm drive. In general, I'm not a fan of 5400rpm drives, so I bought another HGST Travelstar to upgrade my Pro to something faster. I also bought my friend a used PS4 Slim with a 5400rpm HGST drive. I gave it a 1TB Toshiba but I tested all 3 drives to see what the difference in read/write speeds was. The results were not surprising, HGST wins by a wide margin. Original October 2015: Almost 2 years after purchasing the Launch PS4 I decided it was time to give it a little hard drive upgrade so not just more room for games although I still buy physical copies as I am an old school gamer, but also for a slight increase in download speed depending on the game after looking at comparison tests on the internet. Let's say the difference from 5400 rpm to 7200 rpm is not very big in most games, a few seconds in games like Assassin's Creed Black Flag, Shadow of Mordor and Resident Evil, I unfortunately have no difference in Grand Theft Auto 5 seen. I measured the difference with the stopwatch on my smartphone before and after the update. But then again, even SSDs aren't much of an improvement due to some hardware limitations Sony has imposed on the motherboard. I didn't even hear the hard drive working with my ear next to the PS4 and I didn't feel any difference in heat or increased vibration, so no worries. Pros: 1. Great price for what you get 2. HGTS is essentially Western Digital now and the disc has 3 warranties which is pretty good and they even advertise this disc for use with PS43. Slight increase in download speed in SOME games4. Very quiet, almost inaudible. Hardly any temperature rise6. No increase in vibration7. Will last for years if you don't use full game memory. Cons: 1. You won't see any significant decrease in game load time despite 7200RPM2 boost. Might be cheaper for just 1 terabyte3. Game install rips are still restricted to Blu-ray drive number SLOOOWWW4. It would be nice to have a 2 terabyte model5. It's annoying to lose about 130 gigabytes due to PS4 file system and PS46 OS firmware. Don't expect performance results from SSDs or hybrid drives for obvious reasons.
