I installed a new AIRx ALLERGY 20x25x1 MERV 11 pleated air filter for 3 months and immediately noticed that my AC runs all the time. That night he stopped working altogether. My compressor's fan motor was working so hard pulling air through a tightly pleated filter that it overheated and tripped the circuit breaker. The first time I thought it was an accident. After shutting it down a second time, I found out the problem and reinstalled my el-cheapo, a low-limit free-running 30-day filter, and the AC has been working, running, and cooling just fine ever since. When I told my air conditioning technician about this, he confirmed that those expensive, high density pleated filters are notorious for restricting airflow and causing air conditioning compressors to catch fire. Luckily my old Trane commercial did not suffer permanent damage as it would have cost a fortune to repair.
