Review on Samyang SY12M-FX-BK: Superior Ultra Wide Angle Lens for Fujifilm X-Mount Cameras in Classic Black Color by Kiril Baytoshev ᠌

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Normal product, but wanted more for the money.

They say this lens is great for landscapes, however the 2 percent improvement in field of view over a 16mm lens is negligible for photographing a whale. Now, I can only imagine using it indoors to capture a photo free of waves and mosquito sounds.

Pros
  • - with an F2 aperture, you can shoot at ISO 1000, whereas I had to use ISO 2022 or higher when photographing a whale from 16-50mm. - F2 is crisp enough for most uses.
Cons
  • There is ED glass in the design, but the chromaticity is not less than that of a cheap whale 16-50, if not more - very significant distortion; if the sharpness at F11 is still acceptable, then at F13.5 it is already considerably worse, and then the picture is usually muddy. When recording handheld with matrix stabilization, the 12mm (nearly fish) lens causes the image in the movie to "dive" to the sides, which, in my perspective, is unsightly. - price. albeit $200 is far less than the typical price of homegrown optics. It's too much money for me to spend $200 on a game only to be dissatisfied with it and put it back on the shelf. Also, this lens is far cheaper on the secondary market than it would be to buy brand new.
