Switch Original Key

My original key broke because the key was attached to the key and only the straight part of the key remained. Instead of paying for another full fob and cutting the key, my idea was to use a spare case and replace my old (already cut) key with the blank key (and electronics of course) that came with it. This case worked great. In my case, the original key fob was for a 2012 Chevy Cruze. The replacement shell appears to be almost identical and very close to the same quality. I've noticed that some replacement cases have a set screw on the back, but this one just snaps together. This keychain came with no paperwork so I went to YouTube for instructions. Taking the original key fob apart is a lot harder than it appears in most videos (taken by the guys who make the cases) since it's glued together. Gently scoring the seam with a razor knife seems to help, but you just have to be careful not to scratch the circuit board. I've found that a large flathead screwdriver helps start the process. I suggest watching some videos to show you the places to take it apart. Replacing the actual key is fairly easy if you find a small tap to remove the roll pin holding it in the small metal hinge. I used a very small nail and sawed off the tip to leave a blunt end. The needle is tiny and I almost lost it twice in the process. I was afraid the original key wouldn't fit the new hinge but it worked fine. The notch in the key does not line up exactly with the pen slot, but is close enough to insert the pen. Putting everything back together is pretty easy, but make sure you screw the spring in a full turn before snapping it into place. You do this by squeezing the shells together and then twisting the back shell counterclockwise one turn before snapping them together. Make sure the button extends when the buttons are pressed before pressing them simultaneously. It took me a few tries because the spring unwound as I rotated the cases. The video shows this step, but many do not explain it. Good luck with your replacement - I'm very happy with the outcome of mine.
