I had difficulties at first because my radio (Baofeng UV-5R) would transmit when connected to a computer, which a lot of people complain about. It was finally resolved when I followed someone else's advice here in the comments and disabled the device driver from all power management in Windows. I downloaded the driver and software from the Retevis website. I'm not sure if the device driver or the broadcast was causing my problems when I tried to connect to my computer but my cursor stopped moving across the screen. To be on the safe side, I uninstalled all Retevis website software and found that Windows 8.1 only had the device driver I needed. As software I use Chirp. I would suggest first checking that your computer is loaded with the correct device driver. I also liked that Chirp seemed to have more options than the Retevis software. The cable is perfect for a walkie talkie and has a very solid construction.
