Expensive but often not necessary to change.
The Aquaclear foam filter becomes so dirty over time that it cannot be cleaned effectively. I've tried unsuccessfully to make a few pieces of styrofoam with my own hands. Buying an original is the way to go. I replaced them with no impact on bacterial population reduction (e.g. ammonia/nitrite release). As long as you don't replace the ceramic support at the same time, you can easily replace the foam block.
