This is an excellent kit for those who really want to create something impressively intelligent and artistic. Of course, you can use regular kitchen knives, although they're clumsy and inaccurate, and your Halloween pumpkins can look rough and primitive. Our family has created beautifully crafted pumpkins with this 22 piece Bifrost set, and our pumpkins looked amazing when we placed them outside our home, far better than anything we've carved in decades! The pumpkins also looked good in daylight, even before dark. And when the candles lit them up in the dark, they looked amazing! The tools are sharp, durable and comfortable to use. They are very versatile and allow the pumpkin carver to make precise cuts, large or small, with excellent results. We've achieved crisp pumpkin detail by making slightly intricate circular and curved cuts. If I were a museum Halloween pumpkin carver or entered a competition, this set would serve me very well! The tools come in a handy zipped cloth pouch and have elasticated mounts to keep them in place. When we washed the tools, no problem. They are well coated and do not rust. A few notes for the carver: 1. Paper templates vary from spooky to cute. You glue them to the pumpkin and use an awl to poke tiny holes through the paper in the pumpkin to indicate exactly where to cut. I then traced lines along the holes with a black felt tip to guide my carving. ("Connect the dots.") You can find endless patterns on the internet.2. Likewise with the instructions. No printed instructions are included, but again the internet is full of instructions for fine, artistic carving, which knife or small keyhole saw to choose for which cuts, and how best to use the knives.3. We were delighted and received many compliments from our neighbors, who mostly had pumpkins roughly carved with kitchen knives. Not to us! We loved it and undoubtedly carved the best, most elaborate and eye-catching Halloween pumpkins of our lives!
