Review on πŸ”Œ Metra XSVI-6502-NAV: Retain Accessory Power with Non-Amplified Non-OnStar Harness by Robert Viher

Not required when installed without reinforcement.

Bought this expensive wiring harness because it was said to be needed to install an aftermarket radio on a 2006 Dodge Ram. I followed the instructions carefully but it kept draining my battery. I even spent too much time using my phone and app to update device software. I ended up disassembling and reinstalling everything. After 3 days of dead batteries I was fed up and removed everything I had installed and reinstalled everything. This killed two $115 batteries, luckily I was able to claim warranty on the second one. What worked for me was using $7 seat belts from a local retailer. However, the stereo system was not powered. I found that the 12v ignition wire on the truck wiring harness is on a different pin than the wiring harness from the stereo. After some googling I connected the 12V ignition wire from the wiring harness to a cigarette socket (driver's side) which only gets power when the ignition is on. I forgot what forum this was posted on. Turns out it's not needed at all for my setup, with a cheap strap my stereo still stays on until I open the door and then turns off like a factory radio.

Pros
  • Lots of positive vibes
Cons
  • There are some downsides
