Review on Dorman M390024 Brake Master Cylinder by Mark Colbert

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The master cylinder may be fine; Don't know

I'm updating the review now that the master cylinder has been in service for two years. It wasn't a problem; have no regrets with this purchase and I think it's a better choice than a rebuilt unit, depending. With that in mind, I can forgive the misleading photo that suggests it comes with a new tank. Reusing the old one isn't a big deal, and remanufactured ones don't come with a tank either. Bit of a hassle, you have to reuse the gasket between the master cylinder and the brake booster. No problem if you're fine like me. Remanufactured units contain a new seal; Rating one for recovery. As far as I know, the seal is not sold individually. Despite the limitations I'm increasing this from three stars to five stars because it's available at one for these old cars where you normally only find refurbished ones, it's reasonably priced and has been running for two years. master cylinder may be OK; No idea, haven't installed it yet. But only 3 stars because WITHOUT CONTAINER AND LID! The description is misleading and the photo is definitely wrong. Adding to the confusion is the label on the box that says "Contains tank and cap," but they weren't. I have contacted Dorman (very helpful people on internet chat, they have a support hotline) and they have confirmed that this device does not come with a case and the label on the box is wrong. They also stated that the correct photo is in the catalog on their website; no reservoir. I suspect that all these 'new' master cylinders for Ford 1995-90, Lincoln 1994-90 and Mercury 1995-90 with 4 wheel ABS are made in the same factory in China, no matter which manufacturer you choose. I chose Dorman because of the included reservoir; others correctly showed the part without the tank.

Pros
  • New, unrestored
Cons
  • Some minor things
